Historic Jobs - Worst Jobs for Children :: Number 14 - Tightrope Walker

 Ideal for: children who wish to run away from home.

 Job Specifications: You climb about three stories above the ground, and walk a very thin rope with nothing but a long stick to help you balance. But that’s not all. The crowd wants tricks, and tricks you’ll give them. Somersault. Jump. Pirouette. Perform numerous acrobats in midair, while the audience claps wildly and throws popcorn at you as a show of appreciation.

 Drawbacks: One wrong move and you could fall. Sure there’s a safety net— although some particularly evil circus masters will remove this to add to the excitement level of the show—but there’s still the risk that you hit the ground the wrong way and break your neck. It’s all part of the glamour of show business. Keep up the good work, and when you grow too heavy for walking tightropes, you can be promoted to lion tamer.

 Perks: You’re a circus star, with your own dressing room and first dibs at the mess hall. If you are injured, and become a drooling paraplegic, you may find an opening as a circus freak.
